Real-life Treasure Island uncovered in the British Virgin Islands

Kettering, Northamptonshire, England (PRWEB UK) 27 October 2011

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850, exactly one hundred years to the day that Owen Lloyd buried his loot at Treasure Island so it seems fitting to put the historic roots of this epic children’s book in the spotlight around his anniversary. The new book by John Amrhein ‘Treasure Island: the untold story’ has attracted wide-spread interest since its recent publication. It gives an account of a Spanish galleon that was diverted from its course by a storm in the British Virgin Islands in 1750. Two Welsh brothers named John and Owen Lloyd, one of whom had a wooden leg, were entrusted with rescuing the galleon’s valuable load of cochineal, eight tons of silver pieces of eight, chests of silverware, gold and other jewels. The brothers decided to seize their chance and to claim the treasure for themselves. While John Lloyd was captured his brother Owen made it to the Caribbean and buried most of the treasure at Norman Island in the BVI. It led to a frantic search for the silver coins, cochineal, gold and jewels by residents of the island. Owen Lloyd was later captured and held in the fort on St. Eustatius and condemned to the gallows for the theft. He made a daring escape after bribing the guards with help from his brother-in-law at St. Kitts.

The Dutch documents on which part of the book is based were translated by Anne Lee, a translator from Kettering, Northants. Anne Lee commented that it was the most interesting assignment of her career. Anne imagines that she is one of the very few who had the privilege of translating eighteenth century documents about the whereabouts of a treasure from a Spanish galleon, buried on a Caribbean island, that would inspire one of the most famous children’s books in the world.
