But I should say, from what I’ve read so far myself, the manga matches the light novels _very_ closely.

I picked up Time Crisis for the PS2 on sale a few years back but was rather disappointed that it wouldn’t work on my HDTV. I guess I’ll have to find an older TV for these light gun games.

The Germans had developed a weapon which, while not as powerful as the bolt-action Kar98K, had the automatic fire capability of submachine guns such as the MP 40, coupled with a cartridge that was much more powerful and longer ranged than a submachinegun (which fires pistol-caliber ammo). It seemed like the best of both worlds – long range power plus automatic fire.

The weapon was initially called “MP43″ which stood for Machinepistole (19)43. When Hitler’s generals repeatedly asked for more of the new “rifles,” Hitler inquired, “What new rifles?!?” He was initially not happy with the new weapon, but after seeing the glowing reports from the front about these new weapons, dubbed them with the term “Sturmgewehr” – which translates to “assault (or storm) rifle.”

So you can thank Hitler for that nomenclature. However, in mordern parlance, a “true” assault rifle is one that has automatic fire capability, and fires a medium-power round such as the 5.56mmNATO and the Soviet M43 round. Civilian-legal rifles which are semi-auto only are not “true” assault rifles even though they have identical outward appearances to military rifles.

Note that there is no “I” in the word “ORDNANCE,” which has a totally different meaning from the word “ordinance.”

In certian situations, EOD Techs would use a large caliber rifles such as the M107 Barrett .50 Caliber to shoot at UXO/IED’s from a distance in order to destroy it (if it is safe to do so, and there is no concern for the destruction that the explosive may cause the surronding area), since it is safer and easier than to send in the robot or an actual technician.

If your state allows it buy anything your heart desires.

As for the so-called “assault rifles”, there was a federal ban a few years back that has since expired. For a period of time, they were illegal to purchase by private individuals. Some people didn’t know there was an expiration date for that law.

But since most people don’t even know what a real assault rifle actually is, it’s not surprising that they wouldn’t know the legalities and details behind owning them.

If the law in your state says that you can own such a weapon, then it is legal. If the law states that you cannot, then it is illegal.

Simple as that.

Now, why people are misinformed as to what the law states, i cannot answer.
