Bird Control For Airports

Birds have cost airlines big money in aircraft damage, downtime and even downed aircraft. The statistics are staggering and point to the need for aggressive bird control measures.

During a 19-year period from 1990 to 2008, 89,727 strikes were reported to the FAA across the United States. California, Texas, Florida, and New York suffered the most bird strikes (7,442, 5,963, 5,571 and 4,732, respectively). Twenty-one other states each reported more than 1,000

If Birds Aren’t Dying, Where Is Bird Flu?

Scotland: Spring 2006, almost a thousand square miles of Scotland were placed under quarantine after the first British case of H5N1 bird flu was confirmed in a mute swan. The bird was found dead in a fishing village, and after extensive testing it was found, as in 80 to 100 percent of birds it infects, to have died of the lethal virus. Conclusion: The swan, considered local waterfowl, had probably contracted the virus from migrating birds.

United Nations Reports that Bird Flu is Spreading

Ballwin, MO (PRWEB) May 2, 2006

Dr. David Nabarro, the U.N.’s chief coordinator for avian influenza, reported to a meeting of the meeting of the United Nation Forum on April 27.

Nabarro mentioned bird flu’s potential to cause a deadly pandemic similar to that of 1918. “If H5N1 does undergo perhaps two, perhaps three mutations in its genetic material in a particular way, it, too, could become a virus capable of human-to-human transmission, at speed, with high consequences for human health,” he said.

Nabarro summarized the situation:

From 2003 through 2005, the virus was reported in 15 countries. In the first four months of 2006, it has spread to 30 new countries in two new continents, Europe and Africa.

It has stricken more than 200 people and killed 113.

200 million chickens have been killed, causing $ 20 billion is economic losses to poor farmers in poor countries. The worldwide poultry industry is in poor shape due to consumer fear of chicken meat and egss.

It is still spreading through wild birds such as Muscovy ducks and geese that fly long distances.

“Dr. Nabarro is acknowledging the obvious,” says Richard Stooker, author of How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Bird Flu. “But since the United Nations usual approach to serious threats is to ignore them as long as possible, we should all be grateful that so much work is being done to prepare for and control the bird flu pandemic.”

More information on how you can learn How to Protect Yourself and Your Family is available at the author’s website and blog.

Bird Proof Your Home for Spring

Bird Proof Your Home for Spring

(Vocus) March 18, 2009

Spring is a busy time for birds. Warmer temperatures increase food sources, and birds are on the look out for new nesting spots, and mates. Whether they are returning from a winter migration or resident birds weary from a long winter hall, they have a lot of work to be done before autumn.

Birds are in survival mode in the spring. In order to get through the next winter, they will be searching for spots that provide the elements needed to survive. Most homes and gardens provide the three elements necessary for a birds’ survival;

    Food
    Water
    Shelter

Whether you anticipate birds returning to your home, or are dealing with a pest bird problem now, addressing these three elements will make it easy to bird proof a home for the spring. Taking away food or water sources, and blocking off ideal nesting spots like dryer vents and eaves will help send pest birds packing.

Doing a quick check around the home in the beginning stages of spring can mean the difference between successfully deterring pest birds or not. Have you had a recurring problem with nesting birds? If yes, treating these spots with deterrents before the birds return will yield better results than waiting until they have come back. Once they begin to build a nest, birds will be more persistent about keeping the spot.

Common places pest birds like to nest:

    Dryer Vents
    Eaves
    Open Attics
    Garages, Barns or Boathouses
    Under roof tiles
    Under A.C. units

Checking these areas for nesting materials will clue you in as to whether this may be a problem spot. Birds like to nest high, so check beams, ledges, and rafters. If there are nesting materials, a cleanup is essential. Bird droppings and nests can host disease and parasites. A good cleaning will not only protect you and your family from any disease, but also eliminate scents that help a bird identify their old nest.

There are many different bird deterrents available in today’s market that can be use for a wide variety of problems. Bird Deterrents usually fit into Four categories;

Visual Bird Deterrents

Visual deterrents are meant to been seen by birds, to frighten or scare them away from open areas. Visual deterrents will have shiny reflective surfaces, or mock predator features. Visual bird deterrents include Mylar flash tape, Scare Eye Diverters, and Balloons. There are also decoys like owls available. These items work best when hung right in front of a problem area. When the bird fly’s towards the spot, they will see the visual deterrents and get confused or frightened, and want to avoid the area.

Sound Deterrents for Birds

Sound deterrents use recorded bird calls to deter pest birds from large open spaces. A mixture of predator calls, and distress calls can be used to alert birds in the surrounding area of danger. Most sound deterrents are weatherproof and designed for outdoor use. These are ideal to use when you have a large open space to treat. Sound deterrents include the Bird Chase Super Sonic.

Physical Bird Deterrents

Physical deterrents are used to block or prevent birds from gaining access to the area they desire. Physical deterrents include bird netting, and ledge products like the Bird Spike 2000, Bird Slope, and Bird Jolt Flat Track. Bird netting is installed as a screen to block birds from entering areas. Bird Spike, Bird Slope, Bird Gel and Jolt are all used on ledges to prevent birds from landing.

Liquid Bird Repellents

There are also a few liquid repellents used for discouraging birds. Pest control companies can work with fogging machines, or Misting units to deter birds from large open spaces.

Used in these two types of devices are a non toxic grape extract that irritate a birds mucous membranes. If you had a large tree in your backyard where hundreds of birds were congregating, you could call out a pest control company to fog or mist the tree to repel the birds.

There are also live bird traps, and a few other types of bird deterrents available. Knowing what type of bird you are having a problem with, and considering the area that is being affected will help in choosing the best product for the situation. Contacting a bird control company like Absolute Bird Control or Bird-B-Gone can also help ensure that you have chosen the right product. You also have the choice of calling a local pest control company, most pest control companies can help with a pest bird problem.

If this is the first year you are having problems with nesting birds, or had caught the problem too late, there is still hope. As long as you address the bird problem as soon as you notice it, and continue a campaign of harassment, you should have good luck in ridding your home of pest birds.

Bird Control for Yards and Gardens

June 17th, 2011 Comments off

While it’s nice to have rows of flowers in the garden, it’s not so nice to watch flocks of birds destroy your hard work. Without effective bird control, pest birds such as sparrows, swallows, pigeons and crows can and will invade your yard or garden to feed themselves and their young. Blackbirds, starlings, and robins will waste no time yanking out tasty corn seedlings, or chewing into ripening cherries, peaches and blueberries. They also won’t hesitate to crater your lawn

Woodpigeon, the Ultimate Sporting Bird?

February 9th, 2011 Comments off

(PRWEB) July 18, 2005

Woodpigeon shooting; decoying and flighting, are in our opinion undervalued and certainly under priced as a shooting sport. The Woodpigeon is the ultimate sporting quarry, offering a testing and demanding day’s sport. Think Pheasant shooting, think Partridge shooting, think wild bird shooting such as Grouse, Woodcock, Snipe, Ducks and Geese, the Woodpigeon is all these, a true aerial acrobat. Not only testing shooting skills but field craft and knowledge as well.

Anglia Sporting is pleased to offer some of the finest pigeon decoying in East Anglia. Woodpigeon shooting offers better value for money than traditional game or wild bird shooting. Consider thisÂ?

A single, shot partridge may cost in excess of £18 – £20

A pheasant is likely to cost anywhere between £18 – £35

Wild Geese or Duck about £15 – £20

Woodcock around £40 – £50

Grouse – well let’s not go there!

Shoot a bag of say 15 pigeons in a day; you’ll have had some excellent sport and yet spend around £5 per bird and no additional charges for those ‘red letter days’. Reconnaissance and field craft are the keys and to enjoy a good day much effort and expense has to be put into finding the bird’s flight lines and feeding areas. It’s not hard to see why we believe it’s the best value for money shooting sport.

Shooting is currently limited to 3 days per week and whilst individual days are catered for a special weekend package that offers some fine shooting opportunities at a very agreeable rate is our main aim.

The bird is particulalry enjoyable eating with many recipes available on our website. However most chicken recipes can be adapted to incorporate Woodpigeon.

Duck and Geese Waterfowl Hunting With Your Trusted Bird Dog

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

For seasoned waterfowl hunters – be they duck, Canadian Geese or other avian waterfowl nothing takes the place of a trusted and experienced bird dog. Simple as that. The helpfulness, instinct to please their master and intelligence as well as determination have amazed and gratified hunters since the dawn of recorded hunting endeavors. Responsible hunters will make it their primary rule that they do everything within their powers to retrieve down game birds and waterfowl. Nothing is better for this purpose than a trusted “bird dog”.

In choosing and training your waterfowl canine hunting companion what are the basic considerations when it comes to choosing and training your waterfowl hunting dog?

The first question often is – “What kind of dog is best?” Is their a certain breed, size or age? First and foremost it’s a matter of training and routine. Great or even good bird hunting dogs are made, not born that way. It all depends on your situation. What are your boarding facilities that are available? What dogs are available to you – both available and allowable within your financial budget afforded to your hobby and passion of hunting?? Lastly consider the type of hunting environs and game birds that you will encounter and be involved with in the hunt. Then start to make your choices.

To start off, each bird dog is a clean slate. It’s up to you to train the animal best. as much as you may have seen effective retrievers in action, it is the case that these dogs did not come with the instinct intact to be bird dogs; rather they were trained in a regular and consistent fashion from day one. Not only that but training has to be repeated and reinforced again and again, over and over. It’s a case of regular, ongoing and consistent lessons. Next don’t make the mistake of thinking , that even though your dog impresses you with his great skills and bird dog hound dog instincts that he can be trained in the one or two week short time period before hunting season. Start to train your agent promptly the minute the dog comes into your care, then continue to train and reinforce on a most regular , ongoing and consistent basis. Practice makes perfect and there are no shortcuts to make up for hard work in training that is more than consistent and regular in nature, regularity and thoroughness.

If there is one factor to stress it is that your dog should be in good shape. Exercise your canine on a regular basis. How else can you expect your animal, not to be labored and perform best in the hunt? Next ensure that your dog has a full stomach – with a good breakfast before the day begins and as well ensure that if you are not hunting over water that you keep your dog well watered – less the dog become dehydrated as a matter of due course during the hunting day. If the dog is extra thirsty how he can be expected to perform top notch.

It may sound contrite but let your dog have some fun before the intense work begins. These creatures need to work off some of their energies before getting down to business. Its not all work and no play. When you are setting up for your hunt allow your retriever to run around. It’s an amazing point of hunting and wildlife experience that if you do not allow your retriever to “run around” they well may be too excited to listen or hunt well.

When tracking downed birds give your dog its nose. Many an experienced hunter has bet good money with his chums on where he would swear the bird or waterfowl had fallen only to see his dog or dogs pick up the scent and track the prey for a considerable distance. The olfactory senses of these dogs are plain amazing. Once you have your dogs pointed in the correct direction you will be doing everyone (including the dogs) a great favor by letting them do what they do best. After all is that not why you went to all the trouble and expense of obtaining, training and bringing these hunting canines along in the first place.

Remember to keep a first aid kit for your dog with you in the field. Receivers working hard are subject to numerous ailments. Your vet will help you assemble an effective first-aid kit. You may want to carry gauzes and tapes, an anti-bacterial ointment, an ophthalmic ointment in case of eye injuries and a pair of heavy duty tweezers for removing embedded objects.

It can be said that every dog has its day. So is it with hunting dogs. Some days the hunt will be going lickedy split. Other days it can be just plain disaster. You will have your exceptional hunting days of record and days where everything will seem to go wrong and even be classified and remembered as a disaster. Your hunting dog is a reflection of you, your hunting and preparation skills. Your dog may well have off days.
Be patient with the animal. If the day is a major disaster it is best not to take out your frustrations and blame the animal. The animal can only do its best and if blamed or scolded unnecessarily be only confused and more frustrated.

It can always be said that the worst day hunting waterfowl – whether it be ducks or Canadian geese is always better than the best day at work.

Recent Reappearance of Bird Flu in Southeast Asia Demonstrates Researchers Must Learn to Control the Virus in Migrating Waterfowl

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

Ballwin, MO (PRWEB) August 17, 2006

[PRWEB] August 17, 2006 — Not long ago, the United Nations World Health Organization was congratulating Thailand and Vietnam on their success in controlling bird flu infection inside their countries.

Recently, high pathogenic avian influenza has been found again in both countries, along with other countries where it was thought under control: Laos, China and Cambodia.

Apparently the virus was reintroduced into these countries through migratory waterfowl — ducks and geese.

“Millions of chickens will have died in vain,” says Richard Stooker, author of How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Bird Flu. “If experts don’t find a way to control the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus in migratory water fowl.”

“It’s clearly not enough to cull millions of chickens or to vaccinate them. As long as the H5N1 virus is endemic in wild ducks and geese, it will continue to reappear every so often, by spreading from wild birds to domestic poultry.”

“Environmentalists fear that the fight against bird flu will drain wetlands and result in a massacre of wild birds — and they may be right. That would be a disaster, but so will allowing H5N1 to have a safe ride inside the intestines of ducks and geese.”

Richard Stooker created a start to finish proprietary 7 Perimeter Immune Defense System that explains how to defeat bird flu at every stage. More information on how you can learn How to Protect Yourself and Your Family is available at the author’s website and blog.

Can the Number of Bird Strikes be Reduced?

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

Bird-B-Gone, Inc., the largest manufacturer of pest bird deterrents in North America, has more than 100 products to humanly move pest birds.

(Vocus) January 21, 2009

On January 15, 2009, a US Airways Airbus A320 went down into the Hudson River possibly due to a collision with Canada Geese. Luckily all of the passengers and crew were able to evacuate safely. Both engines were hit by birds when the plan flew into a flock of Canada Geese. Could this have been avoided? Birds are the scourge of airports all across the country. Most airports try to chase the birds with sound such as cannons and sound deterrents with limited effect. Some also employ the use of falcons to deter birds from flight paths. So just how can airports rid surrounding areas of birds?

There are new products on the market that reduce birds from open areas. These units create a fog or mist which at a 5-micron particle size floats and rises up to 700’ to get rid of pest birds. The active ingredient in this fog is Methyl Anthranilate, a food grade repellent. When the repellent fog comes into contact with birds, it affects their mucous membrane and trigeminal nerve. In other words, it irritates them to the point of changing their habits. Birds will alter flight patterns, grazing habits and nesting sites. The exposure is harmless to the birds and people. The extract has been widely used by pest control companies for safely and humanely deterring pest birds and geese for decades. The key to most pest bird problems is using an integrated approach combining physical deterrents, audible harassment and sensory products such as misting systems.

These units are new state-of-the-art systems that are easy to install and program. One of the newest systems on the market is the Bird-B-Gone Mist System by Bird-B-Gone, Inc. Bird-B-Gone, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of pest bird deterrents in North America, with over 100 products to humanly move pest birds. Bird-B-Gone Mist is the only misting system that has an LCD touch screen for programming. From the control unit, you can attach up to 64 misters, controlling each one individually. The system is fully automated. Spray units can be set to go off simultaneously or at alternating times depending on bird activity and wind direction. The control panel will keep track of liquid levels, and will notify you when to refill the units.

For more information on Bird Misting Systems and an Authorized Installer in your area, contact Bird-B-Gone, Inc. at 1-800-392-6915 or visit www.birdbgone.com.

USA Bird Control Measures for Canada Geese

January 9th, 2011 Comments off

Populations of Canada Geese have been on the increase over the last decade due to their protected status by both Federal and State agencies. USA bird control experts estimate there are approximately a dozen subspecies of Canada geese, ranging in size from 22 to 48 inches long and weighing from 3 pounds to 24 pounds. Regrettably, Canada geese like to graze and nest on corporate lawns and around fountains, as well as in parks and on golf course greens. These migratory birds have, of late, adopted the easy living conditions of urban environments, preferring to nest in protective vegetation.

Canada geese are highly aggressive and will run after animals and people–sometimes frightening children at parks. Trampling, defecating and eating, these geese cause considerable damage to agricultural crops, golf course lawns, reservoirs, ponds, and green belts. Geese roosting in open areas near airports have been known to create potentially dangerous bird strike collisions.

As most USA bird control pros will tell you, non-migratory Canada geese are stubborn and difficult to move. Some of the more effective goose repellent strategies begin with the removal of cover shrubbery and pond vegetation. Other more direct goose deterrents include the following:

Goose Repellents. Recommended for parks, shorelines, golf courses, cemeteries, lawns, yards, landscaping, shrubs, or any grassy area where geese have become a problem, these non-toxic liquids make grass very unappetizing to pest geese.
The chemical most often used in these taste repellents is a grape extract that’s safe for pets, ducks, geese and humans. The repellents can be applied with any hand-held sprayer onto any freshly mowed lawn. Two applications generally last approximately three months. The best chemical repellents usually won’t wash off with rain or water. Look for chemical goose repellents that are registered with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Audio/Visual Bird Scare Devices. Used in combination as soon as geese invade an area, USA bird control experts note that bird scare devices can persuade pest geese to leave. The secret is to frequently alter the location and type of the audio/visual device to convince geese that they are being threatened by a real predator. Visual deterrents include banners, balloons and flash tape. Banners and flash tape will rattle in the breeze and reflect flashes of sunlight to create an “Optical Distraction Zone” that makes geese uncomfortable. Balloons are often covered with large predator eyes that will make geese feel like they might be attacked by a huge predator. These devices should be installed in advance of a geese flock invasion. They also should be combined with other goose deterrents, and they should be changed often to prevent geese from getting used to them. Finally, the devices are most effective if used at night when geese are roosting.

Physical Barriers. Exclusionary methods can be used to deny geese access to specific areas. Overhead wire grids, for example, can be installed above ponds and small pools to prevent geese landing. Heavy-duty bird-wire fencing, installed 1 to 3 feet from the ground can block geese from entering certain areas. Wide, 4-inch mesh Bird Netting festooned with reflective Mylar flash tape can also be used to discourage geese from gathering above and around ponds or grassy areas.

Bird Spikes. With their large wings, most geese can’t seem to negotiate a landing near or around Bird Spikes. Which is why you’ll see these devices on ledges, parapets, cutouts, signs, beams, chimneys, security cameras, lights, and countless other areas. And since the blunted spikes are harmless to birds and people, bird spikes have gained the approval of most humane groups–including the U.S. Humane Society and PICAS. The spiked strips are easily installed using glue, nails or screws, depending on the surface. USA bird control pros advise buyers to look for bird spikes that have a flexible base, which allows the spikes to be easily bent onto curved surfaces. Spikes like these are ideal for use on rounded signs and signal lights, ledges and wandering parapets. You can also get crush-proof spikes with a non-reflective metal finish. For really large geese, there’s the Mega Spike, which boasts long, intimidating 7-inch tall spikes made of marine-grade stainless steel.

Bird Spiders. Ideal for deterring geese from golf clubhouses, marinas and similar outdoor venues, Bird Spiders sport stainless steel “arms” that dance about in the breeze to discourage geese from landing. USA bird control experts note that today’s bird spiders come in various sizes–including 2-, 4- and 8-foot diameter arm lengths to cover large areas. The spiders have no moving parts to wear out or maintain. The best of breed feature a U.V.-protected polycarbonate base and come pre-assembled for easy installation.

Electric Shock Deterrents. Pest geese who dare to set foot on these Electric Tracks will get a jolt of persuasion they won’t soon forget. Harmless to geese and maintenance workers, Electric Tracks are ideal for use on roofs, signs, ledges, parapets, I-beams, and similar surfaces. The best tracks are flexible so you can easily attach them to virtually any surface. Some newer electric tracks can be wired directly to a facility’s power source or run on a solar charger.

Popular Pest Bird Consultant ‘Dr. Goose’ Now FAA Certified to Advise Airports

Dr. Phil Whitford installs a GooseBuster unit

Eugene, OR (Vocus) July 14, 2010

Who doesn’t love the sight and sound of a skein of Canada geese honking elevated? Well, pilots and airport authorities! Canada geese can spell ample trouble. Their numbers have altered exponentially, turning the species from a loved unsettled visitor to an annihilating nuisance. Pest geese now posture an earthshaking hazard to health, and even life. Since last year’s ‘Miracle on the Hudson’’ galvanized and animated the nation, most of us now cognize it’s in the air that Canada geese can bring down the greatest havoc

But pest geese are a problem on the ground, too. Goose droppings cause distributed pollution in ponds, lakes, golf courses and parks. Children ‘go through the motions’’ on sports fields comprehensive – playing amid feces that incorporate salmonella, e. coli and a host of other organisms. Unwelcome Canada geese rupture up lawns and decimate newly-planted crops.

What to do? Enter ‘Dr. Goose.’ Emeritus professor of biology Dr. Philip Whitford has expended a lifetime analysing Canada geese – especially what makes them GO AWAY. With wit – and an enduring admiration and affection for the species – ‘Dr. Goose’’ regularly explains to posed and technological audiences the biology, habits and little-known quirks of these bewitching but problem birds.

The first and only researcher to capture the rare goose ‘alarm’’ call in a recording, ‘Dr. Goose’’ specializes in the vocalizations of geese. These may sound alike to us, but in fact they are incomparable and highly characteristic – if you are another goose. Working with Pest Bird Companies like Bird-X, Inc., a leading industry authority, over a number of years he has evolved and proven a ‘alarm’ and alert’’ call playback device named the Goose’Buster®. Its four speakers relay digital, unaffected recordings of these biological discouraging calls across an ample area. Humans get word an acquainted, moving, call-of-the-wild cry; but to pest geese, these ‘wilderness’’ sounds signal danger. Multiple studies have shown that problem geese react instantly – and stay away. Dr. Whitford’s most modern tests, near the goose-filled Horicon Marsh in amidship Wisconsin, show eminent efficacy rates and long-term effectiveness in keeping the geese away from blue-chip young crops – a loved food source. Across all control methods tested in individual printed studies, the on-demand playback of Canada goose alarm and watchful calls has been shown to be most efficacious.

It’s vital to understand the geese, since their behavior is affected by instincts that may work for or against our attempts to control them. It’s also highly seasonal. It’s very arduous to travel on cuddling geese with young goslings, as the adults are flightless at this time – but advanced summer is a close-grained time to get down. These efforts pay off again in aboriginal spring, when returning geese can be driven elsewhere before they repossess their territories. Geese are astute – too astute, when we are seeking to fool them. They quickly larn when a planned visit from a collie is callable, and return happily to the property once the dog has traveled on to the next client. Their eyesight and hearing are far more perceptive than ours. Social and distrustful creatures, geese last by discouraging each other immediately when threats loom. ‘Alert’’ calls spell danger. Notching up the panic level, the ‘alarm’’ name of another goose is the equal of a five-alarm fire. It prompts instant escape, without hanging up around to see what the problem might be

A pilot himself, ‘Dr. Goose’’ is all too acquainted with problem wildlife. (He once narrowly escaped grave injury in a collision with a deer on an agrarian runway. In registering the necessitated report, he was bemused to be inquired at what altitude the incident took place.) A familiar figure at pest management and Bird Strike conferences, he lectures nationally and internationally. Fully attested by the FAA as an airport wildlife hazard management consultant, Dr. Whitford is now accessible to assist in enforcing FAA O.K. wildlife management plans for airports.*

For all problem geese situations, the doctor advises a multi-faceted approach, with zero tolerance for pest geese to stay. Controlling pest geese is an ongoing task, established on scientifically sound insight and research. Since geese are assisted, their eggs may only be anointed or addled with a permit. Success may unite habitat alteration with taste aversions, seeable and (most importantly) audible scares to act upon these aesthetic but untidy visitors to travel on.

Certified FAA wildlife hazard management consultants advise airports on wildlife population management and dispersal techniques, endangered species act compliance, wetlands mitigation, pesticide usage, drafting and implementation of integrated wildlife hazard management programs, and review of applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and ordinances under the requirements of Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 139
