How does the game “Duck Hunt” work?

November 11th, 2011 1 comment

Question by VincentC: How does the game “Duck Hunt” work?
I am fairly tech-savvy, but I have wondered for quite a while how the old “Duck Hunt” game for the NES system works. There is no sensor bar for the television, so there doesn’t seem to be a way for the gun’s beam to be intercepted or read by the television. So how can the game register that you are shooting in a certain place when there is nothing to pick up the gun’s firing?

This is just something that has always confused me.

Best answer:

Answer by Healing Vision
I guess it’s something to do with the light gun itself.

In semantics, if “duck” is the generic term, then what is “drake”?

November 5th, 2011 1 comment

Question by Marinaki: In semantics, if “duck” is the generic term, then what is “drake”?
I got this question on my exam and I couldn’t think of an answer, and when I got home I went through my notes, but the answer wasn’t there. Just that duck, like cow or dog, is generic. But what with the drake, bull and bitch?

Best answer:

Answer by beefdirky46
well, a duck is either a female or male, as is the dog. however, I always considered a “cow” to be female, and the bull to be male. so drake and bull may specifically refer to what sex the animal is. like when they call a male rooster a cock.

What do you think? Answer below!

“DUCK” Season Opens in the City of San Francisco; Mayor Newsom Welcomes Latest Amphibious Tourist Attraction

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 4, 2005

Bay Quackers LLC, the only amphibious tour company in the Bay Area, today launched the new San Francisco DUCK Tours. Bay Quackers offers visitors and city natives a unique way to experience San Francisco – by both land and sea, all in one tour. With Captain Barbary Jack at the helm, the brightly painted DUCK whisks up to 30 passengers off to explore San Francisco’s most famous neighborhoods with a crow’s nest view in the open-air ship-on-wheels. During the 80-minute tour, the Captain reveals the City’s historical secrets as he navigates from Fisherman’s Wharf, through Chinatown, North Beach, Union Square, SOMA, and on to China Basin, where the DUCK splashes into the Bay for a spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and city skyline.

“Tourism is a vital component of San Francisco’s cityscape, and we are excited to welcome the DUCK Tours as our newest tourist attraction,” said Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco. “These DUCK tours give visitors a unique perspective of our City’s many diverse neighborhoods and waterfronts.”

Bay Quackers also offers group charters for events such as bachelor or bachelorette parties, office Christmas parties, barhopping tours, birthday bashes and corporate events. “The Tour DUCKs are a great addition to the menu of activities for adventuresome tourists,” said Laurie Armstrong, vice president of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau. “These historic vehicles fit in well with the City’s infamous off-beat character.”

“We worked hard over the past year to meet stringent U.S. Coast Guard safety requirements,” said John Scannell, president, Bay Quackers LLC. “Now our historical amphibian is ready to give people a whole new fun way to experience San Francisco’s vibrant culture, and the Bay. Our first DUCK is called El Pato in honor of the Mission District, and we plan to launch three more very soon: Diva DUCK, for the Castro; Psychadela DUCK, for Haight/Ashbury; and Peking DUCK, for Chinatown.”

Since the 1940s, these amazing vehicles have been used by police departments, fire stations, rescue units, and the U.S. Army. Their name comes from the WWII acronym, “DUKW,” when these amphibious trucks were used to move troops and cargo quickly and efficiently from ships out at sea onto shore. Maneuvering with surprising agility, they are designed to handle choppy oceans, huge breakers, and climb right out of the water through soft sand without losing traction.

DUCK Tours are already popular international tourist attractions in more than 30 cities worldwide, including: Boston and Salem, Mass.; Washington, DC; Branson, Mo.; San Diego, Calif.; Baltimore, Md.; Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; Oahu, Hawaii; Miami, Fla.; Chicago, Ill.; Dayton, Ohio; Portland, Maine; Providence, R.I.; Austin, Texas; Albany, N.Y.; Hot Springs, Ark.; Seattle, Wash.; and abroad in New Zealand, Ireland, England, Singapore and the Caribbean.

The San Francisco DUCK Tours depart seven days a week at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Ticketing hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the ticket booth located at Leavenworth and Beach streets, next to the Cannery Building at Fisherman’s Wharf. For tickets or more information, call 415-431-DUCK, or visit the Web site: http://www.bayquackers.com.

Q&A: Where did the use of the word “duck” meaning “crouch” come from?

October 23rd, 2011 1 comment

Question by Leonhard Euler: Where did the use of the word “duck” meaning “crouch” come from?
Just thinking about it I wonder if it was when they would go duck hunting and when they would see a duck they would scream “duck” making everybody crouch down so they don’t get shot while the one with the gun shoots the duck.

Best answer:

Answer by Electra
The word duck comes from Old English *d?ce “diver”, a derivative of the verb *d?can “to duck, bend down low as if to get under something, or dive”, because of the way many species in the dabbling duck group feed by upending; compare with Dutch duiken and German tauchen “to dive”.

Quack! Quack! Duck Tour is Back, at Half Price Admission the Go Boston Card Just Got Better

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 24, 2010

Smart Destinations, the company behind Go Cards and Explorer Passes, offers a half price Boston Duck Tour ticket to all Go Boston Card holders. Simply present a valid Go Boston Card and get a Duck Tour for only $ 16.28 for an adult ticket (regularly $ 32.57) or $ 11.00 for a child (regularly $ 22.05). The Go Boston Card itself continues provides free admission to over 70 of Boston’s top museums, sights and tours for the price of the card, with savings of up to 55% compared to purchasing separate tickets.

The Boston Duck Tours combine high-energy fun with a unique perspective on all the history that makes Boston a great town, plus some quirky facts that visitors won’t get on just any tour. The Ducks themselves are also a part of Boston history, being driven in both the city’s championship Red Sox and Celtics parades. Whether riding on “Red Sox Nathan” or “Kenmore Karla”, or any of the other Ducks for the 80-minute tour, visitors will laugh and be entertained while learning about the city. Don’t be surprised if the tour guide, appropriately called a “conDUCKtour,” encourages riders to quack at people as they go by. Don’t be surprised at the many people who quack back.

The tour passes by the gold-domed State House, Newbury Street, U.S.S. Constitution, The Holocaust Memorial and much more. Then, the World War II style landing craft takes riders to the edge of the Charles River… and drives right in! The tour bus becomes a tour boat, and riders get a duck’s-eye view of Boston and Cambridge from the water.

“We are always looking for ways to add more value to our products”, said Cecilia Dahl, President and Co-Founder of Smart Destinations. “Boston Duck Tours at half price offers great value to our customers as well as our partners.”

Duck Hunting Game – Shooting Down The Ugly Duckling

During the 1980′s, the 1st hunting video game which was made was a game called duck hunt for the video game console, Nintendo. It needed the use of one special laser gun which allowed us to shoot ducks or ducks. You would be accompanied by one hunting dog which laughs if you miss a duck and would clap when you shoot one. Its graphics were basic and its landscape was not very much exciting, but this game was the base for the technology to move forward to the place

Duck Bill Money Clip: A Gift that Gives a Good Financial Bite — Engraving Now Available for Personalized Gifts Money Clip Shipping is Free

DALLAS (PRWEB) November 21, 2008

New as of today, shoppers can order unique, free-hand engraving of up to twenty-four characters for personalized gifts.

Money Clip Woes:

“Stuffed full a few times, many money clips can never again grip a few slim bills, and carrying two holders, one for cash and one for credit cards, was an obvious problem,” said Tony Cornett, president and chief designer of Duck Bill Design. “Many money clips are more non-functional jewelry than a solution to a daily design problem.”

“After years of kitchen-table conversations, watching how people carry their dough, and giving away not-so-pretty prototypes to ‘guinea pigs’ who agreed to tell me if it worked, I created the large capacity metal money clip I carry today,” explained Cornett, a product-design and development expert inspired by friends to improve money clip functionality. “It’s cool, simple and actually works.”

A Money Clip That Actually Works:

Currency wrapped around plastic, no moving parts and spring-tension steel add up to a gift that guarantees a great money clip experience good enough to replace any wallet.

The Duck Bill Money Clip features:

Quad Bend BiteTM for a pinch that keeps holding Spring tension steel that snaps back to original form Matte or polished finish options Optional engraving – New, for personalized gifts Embossed steel gift box Free shipping in the US via first-class mail Gripping up to sixty folded bills, or an equivalent thickness of “stuff” such as six credit cards, one driver’s license and twenty folded bills, the Duck Bill Money Clip can replace a wallet for most men.

“The Duck Bill name came together when I was looking at a prototype,” said Cornett. “It was a classic Eureka moment. Hey, it looks like a duck’s bill – nostrils, an upturned upper bill – and that was it!”

The free-hand engraving option for customers to order more personalized gifts came out of a chance encounter when Cornett was shopping at a store during one of Ken Brown’s engraving events. Cornett pulled out his money clip, master-engraver Brown engraved it on the spot, and so it began.

Quack it up on the Duck Pond Blog:

The Duck Pond Blog invites photos, video and conversation about the Duck Bill Money Clip user experience. Chief-designer Cornett welcomes input about the original design and future ones. “Drop in, paddle around and quack it up,” says Cornett. “If you MacGyver some amazing situation, or craft a modification unique to you, we want to hear about it and see it here. If you’re really a wallet person and received it as a gift, tell us if it does or doesn’t work for you.”

About Duck Bill Design:

Duck Bill Design, LLC is home to the patent-pending Original Duck Bill Money Clip. On the web since November 2007, the Duck Bill Money Clip is also available from select Dallas retailers including the Nasher Sculpture Center Stores, Culwell & Son and iota. Question by *Mommy to a Princess*: I’m adopting a 2 week old “pecking duck” any one else have one?
Today I am adopting a pecking duck. We are soo excited! Does any one else have one? If so what are they like as pets? We live in the city, but have a big back yard thats fenced and we are getting him a pool. We plan on letting him come onside at night =) We have two toddlers, that are very excited, so if any one else has one if you could let me know what to expect I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by jbloor@att.net
I raised a Peking duck once; lots of fun! (I lived on a canal in FL, and I kept him fenced in at night though he swam near my dock and seawall all day and never strayed for over a year. They are very loyal to my thinking, and bond with you immediately – he’ll think you’re his Momma. (After a year, he found a wild girlfriend duck and sway away with her! But then, 6 mos later, he returned for a brief visit and some bread cubes, LOL!) Many people think they are ugly or ‘warty’ but by the time he gets ugly you’ll already be in love with him. Warning; he’ll be loud and joyous each time he sees you. They make special duck food for babies, and also for adults. Just make sure that no dogs or coons can get over your fence, and have fresh water for him. And no; they cannot be potty trained, but mine loved to sit on my lap and be petted. Just don’t let the kids hold him too tight or restrain him in any way, as he will instinctively try to get away if he feels his little ribs being compressed. Have fun! :)
