How does the game “Duck Hunt” work?

November 11th, 2011 1 comment

Question by VincentC: How does the game “Duck Hunt” work?
I am fairly tech-savvy, but I have wondered for quite a while how the old “Duck Hunt” game for the NES system works. There is no sensor bar for the television, so there doesn’t seem to be a way for the gun’s beam to be intercepted or read by the television. So how can the game register that you are shooting in a certain place when there is nothing to pick up the gun’s firing?

This is just something that has always confused me.

I guess it’s something to do with the light gun itself.

Q:The expression “lame duck”

A’s:
- Designates someone that is lazy

Duck Hunting Game – Shooting Down The Ugly Duckling

October 21st, 2011 Comments off

During the 1980′s, the 1st hunting video game which was made was a game called duck hunt for the video game console, Nintendo. It needed the use of one special laser gun which allowed us to shoot ducks or ducks. You would be accompanied by one hunting dog which laughs if you miss a duck and would clap when you shoot one. Its graphics were basic and its landscape was not very much exciting, but this game was the base for the technology to move forward to the place

When playing a game a question came up “does it weigh more than a duck?” How much is a duck suppose to weigh?

Well, since wood floats on water, and ducks float on water, and witches are made out of wood, a duck should weigh about as much as a witch.

Texas Outdoor Webs Announces its Newest Web Site, Hunting Ranches in Texas, with its New Ranch Finder that Quickly Locates a Game or Hunting Ranch in Texas

Adkins, Texas (PRWEB) January 10, 2006

Hunting Ranches in Texas is an organization of respected game and hunting ranches. Their web site tastefully promotes the products and services of its members to people looking for a ranch with clean, comfortable accommodations, privacy, good hunting, and that legendary Texas hospitality.

Hunting Ranches in Texas is the latest inspiration of Steve Purcell, president of Texas Outdoor Webs whose company provides web services to hunting ranches, deer breeding operations, fishing guides and just about any outdoors business in Texas. Hunting Ranches in Texas advertises the products and services of its members in a banner-free environment that emphasizes quick and easy searches for a game or hunting ranch.

These game and hunting ranches provide a wonderful outdoor experience for their clients. Those clients can range from the individual hunter and his son or friends, to husband/wife and father/daughter hunts. A hunter would not hesitate to bring his wife or daughter to one of these ranches because the accommodations emphasize privacy and comfort.

Each of the member ranches, of course, has its own web site, but they do not rank well in the search engines because of a lack of content. The Hunting Ranches in Texas web site takes care of that by itself ranking high in the search engines, and that is why Steve Purcell decided to start the organization and its web site.

The web site reflects the beliefs of Steve Purcell and his philosophy of web site design. He is certain that internet users are turned off by web sites with banner ads, pop-ups, etc. “They flash at you like a used car lot”, he says and “people have a hard time finding the hunting ranch they’re looking for when they have to wade through a blizzard of cheap, flashing banners and pop-ups.” So you don’t see these annoying advertisements on his web sites.

“People want to find a ranch quickly and easily, and our clients want to be found quickly and easily”, says Purcell. That’s where the Ranch Finder comes in. When you go to the web site, the Home Page contains a big map of Texas divided into seven regions. A person looking for a hunting ranch just clicks his mouse on the region where he wants to hunt, and all of the member ranches in that area are displayed. That’s the Ranch Finder.

Each member’s advertisement contains information about the ranch, the species that can be hunted there, the type of hunts; i.e., bow or rifle, guided, or unguided, the accommodations, reservation information, directions, and contact information. In addition, each graphic contains hyperlinks to the member’s home web site so, in the unlikely event you don’t find the information you’re looking for on the member’s advertisement, a simple click of the mouse takes you to the member’s web site.

The simplified search mechanism of Hunting Ranches in Texas admirably achieves the dual goal stated by Steve Purcell of making a Hunting Ranch easy to find, and of making the Hunting Ranch easily found. Searchers like the quick and intuitive feel of the web site and will return again to a web site that so obviously has their interests in mind. Ranch owners are happy with the fact that their advertisements can be found so easily and don’t have to compete with a blizzard of banner ads and distracting pop-ups.

For additional information on the news that is the subject of this release, call Steve Purcell at (210) 649-1187, or visit http://www.huntingranchesintexas.org. Steve is available during the day, evenings, and weekends to take your calls.

About Hunting Ranches in Texas:

Steve Purcell, a native Texas, is the owner of Hunting Ranches in Texas, an organization of game and hunting ranches, whose purpose is to promote the hunting ranches of Texas. Steve is a Master CIW certified Web Site Manager who specializes in building and maintaining web sites for Texas outdoors businesses. He makes his home in Adkins, Texas and has lived there since 1997.

Texas Fish & Game Mottled Duck Project Gets a Boost

Texas Fish & Game Mottled Duck Project Gets a Boost

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) March 20, 2009

“We took a banded mottled duck on the first day of the tour, which will be covering five locations in five days to raise awareness to waterfowl habitat needs. Considering that we have been collaborating to help the mottled duck it was very serendipitous. We can’t wait to find out where that bird came from,” said Tim Soderquist DU regional director.

TF&G Executive Editor Chester Moore had the idea to distribute posters asking hunters to turn in mottled duck band information after talking with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials and so far along with DU have made them visible to thousands of hunters.

“I learned they need more data on mottled ducks and that the species has been in decline for quite some time. A lot of hunters don’t turn in band information because they know many are banded on local refuges but it is very important to their management so if you shoot a banded mottled duck or any other species please turn the data in,” Moore said.

Moore noted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Migratory Bird Management and U.S. Geological Survey have done an awesome job collecting information on waterfowl and they along with TPWD should be commended on their work.

“Banding information in general is very important and gives us great incite into the mysteries of migration. Plus, who wouldn’t want to know where the bird they shot came from?”

The first stop of the Duck Tour also brought into focus the need for habitat restoration.

“We hunted with Steve Parker of Two Bayous Hunting Club who has done a marvelous job of managing that property. We hunted what used to be a solid Chinese tallow flat that was worthless to ducks but had been reclaimed in the name of waterfowl conservation. Without that kind of ethic and the work of groups like DU, our resource would be in very serious peril and our hunting heritage would be on life support.”

“Conservation requires action and we need to step it up going into 2009 with the many threats facing the ducks we so love. Texas Fish & Game magazine is by far the leader in waterfowl conservation in the publishing world. This year we added a new section called ‘True Green’ that is all conservation but not the kind you hear about on the six o’clock news. This is the real deal with groups like DU and others featured for their worthy conservation practices.”

Why do we play the childhood game “duck duck goose” in the NE US and “duck duck gray duck” in the MW US?

Question by goldilucks97: Why do we play the childhood game “duck duck goose” in the NE US and “duck duck gray duck” in the MW US?
Who ever came up with this silly game and why is there such a variation? Has anyone else ever noticed the difference?
Extra tidbit: I noticed this difference when I lived in Minnesota and discussed this when I went out to dinner with colleagues (most of them were from Minnesota originally and had never heard of ‘duck duck goose’)

the game seems to goon and on forever and there has to be a way to win it!

The game is for kids, so I’d guess the one that has the patience to keep at it the longest wins.

You could keep points, if you get away from the person that gooses you, then you get a point. If they catch you, you don’t get a point.

Small Game Hunting Weapons – Rifles

January 18th, 2011 Comments off

Small game hunting involves pursuing small animals like rabbits, squirrels, and ducks. Since these animals are small, high power weapons are not needed to hunt them. You are better off investing in a weapon that has greater accuracy to be able to target the small game better.

Also, the price of ammunition should be considered, too, since a hunter can take a great number shots in one day.

Under these conditions, a rim-fire rifle would be perfect

Are Game Officials Entrapping Hunters with Decoys?

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

Recently many stories have been published about game officials using decoys to catch hunters in illegal acts. All of these stories seem to have one theme that hunters are constantly breaking hunting laws by shooting animals out of cars. Although all of these stories highlight the negative aspects of hunting it makes me wonder how many decoy traps result in nothing? With all of these increased occurrences of hunters shooting game decoys some people question game officers saying that the placement of the decoys is entrapment.

In the article above it shows that 8 out of the 29 cars that drove by the decoy attempted to hunt it with only 6 doing so illegally. This number seems very high and I am disappointed in the hunters of the area who hunted illegally. I find it amusing that the media seems to only publish negative stories surrounding decoy hunting. Don’t get me wrong I feel that if you illegally hunt you deserve to be punished and I know of a few people who have been caught shooting decoys. When you break the law you need to be punished.

With more and more reports of people shooting decoys I think that more needs to be done to educate hunters and encourage them not to hunt illegally. As the technology used in the decoys increases decoys will look and act more realistic which will mostly likely cause more incidents. With all the negative press it seems that the only thing being accomplished is destroying the reputation of all the good hunters out there.

The placement of the decoys is seen to some hunters as being entrapment because they feel that the decoys are encouraging them to do something that they otherwise would not have done. Using the decoys as been reviewed by courts and they were deemed legal because they in no way encourage the hunter to fire shots. Just because you see an animal that you can hunt and it is easy to kill doesn’t mean you have the right to hunt it. In my opinion all of the hunters that are looking to take these decoys while driving by are just looking for an easy kill and that takes away some of the fun in hunting.

All of these hunters seem to not support the Fair Chase which encourages hunters to be in the field with their rifle when the hunt. If you are hunting from inside your car I don’t see how you are in the field? To me I don’t see how you can consider it hunting if you are in a motorized vehicle chasing down an animal. Unless you are handicap and have limited mobility I think that you should be punished for hunting with a motor vehicle, and in most states you are.

What is you opinion on the use of decoys by wildlife officials? Is it entrapment or are these hunters giving hunting a bad name?

Online Hunting Games: Early Age Video Game History

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

Even though personal computers have been around for a very long time, they really became popular in the 1980’s and have evolved into almost a necessity of life for many people. However, video games really began with the invention of the Atari video game system which would eventually evolve into more in-depth and more powerful game systems. One of the earliest hunting games developed was Duck Hunt which was made for the Nintendo game system.

Duck Hunt required the use of a special Nintendo Zapper light gun that plugged directly into the system. Players would then wait for ducks to show up on the screen which looked like a field. When the ducks came along, they would point and shoot. They were accompanied by a faithful hunting dog who would laugh if the duck was missed and congratulate on a successful shooting. The game also allowed players to shoot clay pigeons if they chose.

There was really no ending in the Duck Hunt game, however there were playing levels. Depending on how good the player got, he or she would advance up to 99 levels at which point, the game would go to level 00. At that level, no ducks would appear, but you would hear wings flapping. After three times of no ducks appearing, the game would be “over”.

After Duck Hunt, there were many other hunting video games that would begin to emerge on the market including Deer Hunter, Big Game Hunter, and Dangerous Hunts. Most of these games began for video game consoles like Nintendo, but the computer industry would soon become more and more involved as these games began to rise in popularity. While opinions vary as to which hunting video game was the first one developed for the home computer, many think that it was called “The Hunting Game” and was made by Oquirrh Productions. The Hunting Game allowed players to hunt for mule, deer, elk, and white tail deer from 48 separate locations. You were allowed to use a rifle, a bow, or a muzzle loader to hunt your prey. You also could hunt for turkey or water fowl from 18 separate locations.

When The Hunting Game first came onto the market, it caused quite a stir among hunting enthusiasts as well as animal rights activists. In fact, in many circles, the emergence of hunting video games brought about much debate and controversy.

Those who enjoyed hunting in the “real world” found these new games exciting and a great way to get some entertainment without leaving the comfort of their own home. They saw the games as a great way to be able to hunt animals they might never be able to do in real life such as bears and moose.

After all, the average Midwestern hunter sees plenty of deer on hunting expeditions, but their chances of hunting bear or elk is limited without a trip someplace.

On the other hand, animal rights activists threw a fit over these games because they perceived them as just another way to harm the animal population and promote violence against our furry friends. Even though the animals were just a bunch of coding made up by a software programmer somewhere, they still felt that video games promoting hunting only added to the real hunting of animals which they perceived as wrong.

At any rate, the fact remained that hunting video games took the market by storm and soon became some of the most popular selling games and software around. Software developers began to make these games much more challenging offering up different options for players that would make the games more enjoyable.

Today, there are hundreds of hunting video games for enthusiasts to choose from that have evolved into truly challenging games. Some may think that a point and click game where you can “down” a virtual deer might be a bit boring, but those who love these games disagree wholeheartedly.

They provide not only entertainment, but also a way to hone their hunting skills at any time of the day or night. When you spend a certain amount of time honing your tracking skills on the computer, chances are pretty good that you’ll be able to use those skills while hunting for real.

Why is it that in Minnesota during the game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” it is instead “Duck, Duck, Grey Duck”

January 9th, 2011 Comments off

Question by Caty S: Why is it that in Minnesota during the game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” it is instead “Duck, Duck, Grey Duck”
For example, in any other region of the United States, it would be “Duck, Duck, Goose!” however, in Minnesota, it is “Duck, Duck, Grey Duck!”

What are the origins of Duck Duck Goose, and where could possible variations have originated from? Help! Thank you in advance (:

Best answer:

Answer by Midnight S
“This site is dedicated to the wonderful game of Duck, Duck, Gray Duck! You may or may not be wondering why this site exists or you may be thinking, “Hey this guy’s nuts, it should be duck, duck, goose.” If so you probably aren’t from Minnesota (or at least weren’t a kid there).

Duck, Duck, Gray Duck Explained
It’s a lovely kids game in which everyone sits in a circle except for one person who is it. The person who is it goes around the circle and taps each person on the head and says “duck.” At some point though, and this is the fun part, she says “Gray Duck!” and starts running around the outside of the circle. The gray duck has to get up and chase her around the circle. If the person who is it gets around to the gray duck’s vacant spot in the circle before the gray duck catches her then the gray duck becomes it. Otherwise the same person is still it.

So what happend to the goose?
It turns out that Minnesota is the only state around that plays “Duck, duck gray duck” all the rest of them (and Canada by the way) play duck, duck, goose. Go figure. Here is a newspaper clip from the Minneapolis Star & Tribune on the matter: “‘Duck, duck’ apparently has no shades of gray”(600k) by James Lileks from Feb 19, 1999.”

Here is a link for the variations of that game.

Hope this helps!
