“DUCK” Season Opens in the City of San Francisco; Mayor Newsom Welcomes Latest Amphibious Tourist Attraction

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 4, 2005

Bay Quackers LLC, the only amphibious tour company in the Bay Area, today launched the new San Francisco DUCK Tours. Bay Quackers offers visitors and city natives a unique way to experience San Francisco – by both land and sea, all in one tour. With Captain Barbary Jack at the helm, the brightly painted DUCK whisks up to 30 passengers off to explore San Francisco’s most famous neighborhoods with a crow’s nest view in the open-air ship-on-wheels. During the 80-minute tour, the Captain reveals the City’s historical secrets as he navigates from Fisherman’s Wharf, through Chinatown, North Beach, Union Square, SOMA, and on to China Basin, where the DUCK splashes into the Bay for a spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and city skyline.

“Tourism is a vital component of San Francisco’s cityscape, and we are excited to welcome the DUCK Tours as our newest tourist attraction,” said Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco. “These DUCK tours give visitors a unique perspective of our City’s many diverse neighborhoods and waterfronts.”

Bay Quackers also offers group charters for events such as bachelor or bachelorette parties, office Christmas parties, barhopping tours, birthday bashes and corporate events. “The Tour DUCKs are a great addition to the menu of activities for adventuresome tourists,” said Laurie Armstrong, vice president of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau. “These historic vehicles fit in well with the City’s infamous off-beat character.”

“We worked hard over the past year to meet stringent U.S. Coast Guard safety requirements,” said John Scannell, president, Bay Quackers LLC. “Now our historical amphibian is ready to give people a whole new fun way to experience San Francisco’s vibrant culture, and the Bay. Our first DUCK is called El Pato in honor of the Mission District, and we plan to launch three more very soon: Diva DUCK, for the Castro; Psychadela DUCK, for Haight/Ashbury; and Peking DUCK, for Chinatown.”

Since the 1940s, these amazing vehicles have been used by police departments, fire stations, rescue units, and the U.S. Army. Their name comes from the WWII acronym, “DUKW,” when these amphibious trucks were used to move troops and cargo quickly and efficiently from ships out at sea onto shore. Maneuvering with surprising agility, they are designed to handle choppy oceans, huge breakers, and climb right out of the water through soft sand without losing traction.

DUCK Tours are already popular international tourist attractions in more than 30 cities worldwide, including: Boston and Salem, Mass.; Washington, DC; Branson, Mo.; San Diego, Calif.; Baltimore, Md.; Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; Oahu, Hawaii; Miami, Fla.; Chicago, Ill.; Dayton, Ohio; Portland, Maine; Providence, R.I.; Austin, Texas; Albany, N.Y.; Hot Springs, Ark.; Seattle, Wash.; and abroad in New Zealand, Ireland, England, Singapore and the Caribbean.

The San Francisco DUCK Tours depart seven days a week at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Ticketing hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the ticket booth located at Leavenworth and Beach streets, next to the Cannery Building at Fisherman’s Wharf. For tickets or more information, call 415-431-DUCK, or visit the Web site: http://www.bayquackers.com.

Messenger dog with its handler, in France, during World War I

Image by National Library of Scotland
Messenger dog with its handler, in France, during World War I. This collie dog worked as a messenger in the front line under constant gunfire. A scrolled up message can be seen attached to the dogs collar. Dogs were also used in the trenches to kill rats and mice, thereby protecting food supplies. In addition to carrying out messenger duties and various other tasks, a regimental mascot also helped to maintain the troops morale.

Most of the armies involved in ‘the Great War’ had specially trained dogs in many of their regiments. These dogs performed a wide range of important tasks, including carrying messages, sentry duty, acting as decoys, ambulance duties and killing vermin. Keeping a pet also helped to raise the morale of the soldiers, by adding an element of domestic home life to the trench.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. "Bruce", a well known messenger dog who is always working under shell fire in the line.']

Hunting Season, 1918

Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
Hunting was a popular sport among the men of Upper Arlington and their hunting dogs. This photograph, from the December 1918 Norwester magazine, accompanied a short essay describing how hunting dogs became restless a day or two before hunting season opens, as if they knew they were soon to go out into the field to hunt.

http://www.saffroncraig.com/_catalog_55921/Forest_Elementals

3 New Designs in two color ways

Grazing elks, serene birds and simple blossoms define the designs for this season. Rich purples and forest greens and earthy browns were the color inspiration to take us into the change of season.

Elk Landscape—a mythical landscape of grazing elks and geese and bubbling water

Goose Bubbles—a motive print where the elk and the goose meet at a pond at the bottom of a sacred waterfall in a spirit land

Bird in Leaves—a simple yet evocative design where swaying bush vines invite birds to play, carefree, amongst the foliage

New colors for old favourites

To extend the new range two popular fabrics are now available in magenta and purple:

Ginkgo Blossoms—a versatile and intricate print inspired by whirling blossoms in a summer breeze.

Squiggly Flower—a free, hand drawn design. The detailed pattern makes it a very versatile for all applications.

Previous fabric ranges

Saffron Craig’s catalog comprises of 3 other fabric ranges, the ever so popular Owl fabric range, the Fields range and the Fantastic Fairy range. All of which are still available through her website and retail outlets.

About Saffron Craig

Her mission is to inspire others through her creativity and offer exciting and contemporary fabrics to a younger audience. Designing clothing and fabrics is her passion. She is inspired by the world around her, especially the Australian landscape. Nature and the unlimited world of the imagination are channeled into her colorful designs, all of which tell a story.

Whether playful fairies, elks grazing in meadows or elegant flower motifs, Saffron Craig’s fabric designs are created from the heart. They are conceived in the pages of her scrapbook and come to life woven into the fabrics of other people’s lives in their own quilts, cushions and clothing.

Her career in fashion and textiles started with her self-titled fashion range Saffron Craig. She showed at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in 2004.

The birth of her daughter Sequoia Blossom set her on the journey towards the creation of her fabrics. There is a childlike wonder to many of her designs, inspired by Sequoia’s beauty and the unique and magical way in which she sees the world.

Saffron Craig has her own website and online shop and is represented through fabric retailers worldwide.

Duck

John Dillwyn Llewellyn (1810-1882)

Collection of National Media Museum

In the 1850s the length of exposure time prevented pin-sharp photographs of wildlife that couldn’t be counted on to stay still. John Dillwyn Llewellyn’s ingenious solution was to pose stuffed birds & animals in appropriate natural settings. This duck at the base of a tree is quite convincing, if slightly glassy-eyed.

Goose Hunting Gear – 4 Latest Innovations

January 10th, 2011 Comments off

Seriously, what is wrong with the old, time-honored goose hunting gear? All the basics required are there–decoys that look very lifelike, a reliable blind, a shotgun that is properly calibrated, good ammunition, and special clothes that are water-resistant and warm to ward off the damp morning chill. Sometimes, it also includes a goose caller, but this is useless unless the hunter knows how to handle it properly. Instead of attracting the geese, it may actually put them off! To top it all, the entire equipment comes at a low cost.

The marketing specialists and the new breed of hunters would totally disagree with the above-mentioned views! They believe that new things are always improved versions of the old and therefore should replace them at the right time. And all new ideas are not bad, some are truly wonderful! So you have the “inventors” who come up with an entire range of new goose hunting gear year after year!

Actually, it is not such a bad idea after all! For the avid goose hunter, yearly additions to his/her gear will ensure that there is something to suit every occasion and every location. Since retail outlets and hunting specialty shops can burn a hole in one’s pocket, the sports hunter could buy the latest gear from online sales or auctions or swap meets conducted by hunting clubs at bargain prices as compared to the actual cost. But the web sites have to be checked out first to make certain that they are reliable. Also, is the goose hunting gear old and used, or new?

Now, what exactly are the latest innovations being offered in the name of new goose hunting gear?

(1) Generally, a pit comes in useful when putting up blinds. But sometimes the terrain is too flat, and digging a pit is not at all possible. In such situations, the Laydown blinds prove to be the best! Putting them up and getting them down is extremely easy. They are lighter in comparison to many other blinds and therefore easy to transport. In addition to their practicality, these blinds have a minimal profile and are low to the ground. Thus, they are definitely a terrific bargain!

(2) As mentioned earlier, a manual goose caller is useles unless handled properly. Well, we have electronic goose callers now! The snag is that these are not allowed everywhere–some states or hunting regions ban their use. Their hunting regulations do not consider them as legal devices to be used for hunting.

(3) Simple and made of plastic, the traditional decoys or goose replicas generally do not work after two or three days. The latest goose hunting gear includes mounted decoys. The weighted stand plus the spring and swivel attachment give the impression that the decoy is moving, or rather bobbing up and down in the wind. Smart geese that had refused to be fooled by the traditional decoys, will truly find the ‘new types’ a little puzzling!

(4) It is a common sight to see the birds stretching their wings at feeding times. So the other type of decoy offered with the new goose hunting gear, imitates this movement of the goose stretching its wings. Earlier, flags were used to feign the movement of the bird’s wing on the ground. But they did not prove very useful since the birds got used to the trick!
