The video, which features a photographer in an entanglement with a goose, was released on YouTube, Dailymotion, and other leading sites last week. The photographer’s unconventional approach to problem solving could be seen as controversial.

The video was filmed guerrilla style in Leeds, West Yorkshire, with a combination of professional actors, film crew and extras (including the part of the photographer) recruited via Facebook and Gumtree. Alan Jones who plays the photographer said, “I was really excited to see myself on YouTube but hope my debut is not too controversial. It’s been a real demonstration of what can be achieved and shows businesses that perhaps would not have traditionally advertised on Television that they can produce a fantastic result and be able to distribute their work in an audiovisual format.” There has so far been no comment from the goose.

The film took three months to develop with the majority of that time spent brainstorming ideas with the production team. Concepts that were dismissed included running across cows, beat boxing, large inflatables, kids driving trucks, 1950s style educational films and building a time machine. “The aim was to find an idea that was provocative in order to elicit a response and maximise the video’s potential for spreading virally whilst maintaining a balance of responsible advertising” says Fellows and Associates Managing Director, Pete Fellows.

The best way to find waterfowl during the fall migration is to ask those who are constantly scanning the skies for south-bound flocks – waterfowl hunters. Ducks Unlimited is offering the opportunity to access migration information from hunters all across the country through DU’s 2010 Waterfowl Migration Map, the most in-depth and widely-used online waterfowl migration mapping tool.

A combination of cutting-edge technology and word-of-mouth communication among duck hunters and waterfowl enthusiasts, the DU Migration Map is the most comprehensive waterfowl migration map on the web.

“The migration map is one component of DU’s ‘Opening Day’ website, the ultimate waterfowl hunter’s resource aimed at getting waterfowl hunters geared up for the season,” said Anthony Jones, DU’s web director. “We received more than 10,000 reports for the migration map last year, which greatly benefited waterfowl hunters in their scouting and planning efforts. During the off-season, we used feedback from supporters to improve the map. The result is a more powerful and innovative asset that duck hunters can’t afford to miss.”

The migration map allows users to report waterfowl activity and hunting conditions in their local areas. Visitors loading the map will then see an aerial view of North America with colored markers scattered across it. Each marker represents user-submitted reports with color-coded waterfowl concentrations. Hunters can click on any marker to view the detailed reports, and in some cases, see aerial maps of their favorite hunting spots. Waterfowl enthusiasts are also encouraged to submit reports and can use the map to follow the annual migration.

The 2010 Waterfowl Migration Map includes features like detailed reporting, weather forecasts, improved imagery and navigation, a full-screen map, e-mail notifications for reports submitted from personally selected locations, historical data based on reports from throughout the season, and a clear activity scale showing pre-migration, peak-migration and post-migration activity

RetroDuck.com has been selling t-shirts online, and from a small retail store across from Michigan State University since 2003. Last month the company launched a new website, OwnShirts.com, which offers customers the ability to design their own t-shirts over the Internet. RetroDuck.com is the first print shop in Michigan to launch this kind of service.

“It gives the customer total creative control, and they can design at home, school, work, or anywhere Internet access is available,” said Sean Maday, company founder.

The new web based design software was launched on Thanksgiving Day, and has received a warm response from the company’s existing customer base.

“It is really neat to see customers drafting their own t-shirt design using all of the clip art and text fonts that we have available. In the past, we have offered the same creative resources, but had no good way to demonstrate them to potential customers. Now, customers can change colors and arrange artwork and text however they wish.”

Once a customer completes a design, the software interprets the images, and sends them in a print ready format to RetroDuck’s production staff. Participants in an ongoing focus group have commented on the versatility of the software, and felt limited only by their design skills.

“Some people are not confident in their personal design abilities. Even so, those customers can use the software to give us a rough idea of what they are looking for, and then we can connect them with one of our professional designers.”

As the fall hunting season approaches, there’s one question on the mind of every duck hunter: Where are the ducks? Ducks Unlimited is now helping answer that question. This week, Ducks Unlimited launched the most comprehensive migration map on the Web today.

It’s online now at http://www.ducks.org/MigrationMap.

“This is a must have tool that duck and goose hunters will use. It’s a truly integrated migration map of the U.S. and Canada, so they can see where the ducks are during the migration season,” said Anthony Jones, Web manager for Ducks Unlimited. “For years, people have been asking for a comprehensive, interactive map like this. That’s exactly what we’re giving them — and then some.”

Migration map users can report on waterfowl numbers in their local areas or hunting locations. Visitors loading the map will see an aerial view of North America with real-time colored “markers” scattered across the map.

Each dot represents a user-submitted report with color-coded waterfowl concentrations. Hunters can click on any dot to view the detailed report and in some cases, view detailed aerial maps of their favorite hunting locations. They can even select which type of view they prefer — aerial, road or a hybrid view.

Users also can view migration patterns from two, five and 10 days back on the map.

“This allows hunters to not only see present activity levels, but also lets them know how birds are moving over time,” Jones said.

Users can also switch between different classifications of waterfowl, such as diving ducks, puddle ducks and geese.

“When a user submits a report, we ask them to classify the waterfowl they encountered. If they aren’t sure, we have a waterfowl id section where they can identify a bird down to the species level,” said Jones.

As an added bonus, visitors to the migration map can also subscribe to a special service and receive instant email notifications when a report is posted to their favorite hunting location.

The migration map is available throughout the fall and winter months exclusively on the Ducks Unlimited Web site, http://www.ducks.org.

Steven Richard White Sr. began his woodcarving career in 1980 when he established S. R. White Gunstocking; focusing on the crafting of early American flintlock rifles. It was during this time that he met and married his wife, Linda. Shortly after their marriage in 1985, they began S. R. White Carving, with Steve carving and Linda painting. The two talents combined to produce their own style of decoys and folk art carvings. Through the years, the business has grown and they are assisted by several skilled craftsmen. Steve is the master carver putting the finishing details on each piece with his files and chisels. Linda keeps busy supervising the painting and being the business manager. Each year they research books and photos to create their original designs by S. R. White.

DumbCop.com Launches Web Site, Law Enforcement May Never Be The Same

Think you’ve seen it all? Think again. A new web site promises to tickle the funny bone and get your blood pumping at the same time. www.DumbCop.com is a new website dedicated to videos, photos and stories of of police officers doing some very funny, and sometimes not so funny things.

The site is the brainchild of Mark Smith and Rick Williams of New YorK City, and the pair says they know it will be controversial.

“Everything on our site is in the public domain, so it’s not as if we’re going out and trying to interfere with police. This stuff is out there, and we just thought to collect it,” Smith says, “That being said, police are usually pretty sensitive to criticism, and I suppose our site isn’t exactly complimentary.”

Complimentary it’s not, but Williams adds that they nevertheless expect to find a following among law enforcement personnel; “If I was a cop, I’d be all over it. The stuff that’s funny should cause them to laugh at themselves, and the cops that get busted for doing bad things are hopefully guys they wouldn’t want in their department”.

The content ranges from the funny; a patrol officer being chased by a smitten wild turkey during a traffic stop (yes, really) to the shockingly funny; a video of an LAPD officer driving straight through a concrete wall (eliciting an audible “OOOOOhhhhh” from the news anchor narrating the chase). In both cases, the officers were unharmed.

However, it doesn’t stop there. www,DumbCop.com has several videos of police officers losing control of their emotions, and the cameras don’t shy away from the resulting brutality. Some of the videos can be hard to watch because of the abuse they show on what are mostly helpless subjects. In many of these cases the officer’s employment was terminated once the videos came to light.

Smith and Williams are unrepentant, “If the police are going to break the law under the color of authority, they deserve every bad thing that happens to them as a result. However, it is important to note that ours is not an activist web site. We are not lobbying for anything. We are just showing viewers what is out there.”

Smith and Williams say that their motivation is purely to have fun, and if a little social commentary happens in the process, that is fine with them.

The next item on the agenda is to present the Dumb Cop Of the Year award, or DeCOY as they call it. The DeCOY is going to be presented, in their words, in the spirit of the Darwin Awards, as an award of ignominious distinction. Dumbcop.com doesn’t appear to be hurting for contenders.

Leading the way is Casselberry, FL police officer, Sgt. Andrea Eichhorn, who, according to reports, inexplicably decided to sue the parents of a nearly drowned baby after slipping on their wet floor while responding to their 911 call. Also high on the list is a Prince George, MD, officer who shot two furniture movers, killing one of them, and subsequently drew his gun on a property appraiser.

“Well, I guess you could say we’re not exactly lacking contents,” laughs Williams,” Adding, on a serious note, that he feels particularly bad for the victim in the Maryland case, “Yeah, that was just every shade of wrong.”

But will the Prince George officer be awarded Dumbcop.com’s DeCOY? With almost two months to go, Smith and Williams say the race is still wide open, and new content arrives every day.

We decided to asked them if they have a particular favorite video or story, and we got the answer we should have expected at this point, “Well, you know, there are so many and they sort of become like your children, you love them all equally…… ,” Williams managed to deadpan before bursting into laughter. “No, seriously, the one where the poor cop tries to rescue a lady from a house that isn’t on fire, while the neighbor’s house burns (rescue units were on the correct scene, but the lone officer and camera team were not) is wicked funny. I’ve probably watched it fifty times.”

Smith adds that, among Dumbcop.com’s offerings, the prison escapee that convinces a police officer that he is, in fact, a jogger, is a highlight.

Dumbcop.com’s official launch date is November 8th, 2007, and both Smith and Williams are anxious to see how many kindred spirits are out there. As for their eponymous DeCOY award, the winner will be announced on January 1st, 2008.

Former Miss UK Launches PETA ‘Force-Feeding’ Ad Campaign Outside Selfridges

Former Miss UK Brooke Johnston joined an elegantly dressed woman – who was force-fed by a ‘waiter’ to launch an ad campaign and simulate the agony of foie gras production – at a dinner table set up on the pavement outside Selfridges in London today on the eve of the store’s centenary celebrations. Johnston is upset about the suffering that birds who are killed to make foie gras endure, and she is urging Selfridges to drop the cruelly produced tinned food. Birds’ livers become painfully engorged during foie gras production as a result of the cruel force-feeding process. A huge ad that includes a photo of Johnston being force-fed next to the message “Selfridges: Force-feeding is Cruel” is being displayed on a van, which will drive around Selfridges all day. PETA plans to tour the UK throughout the summer in vans bearing large versions of the ad.

To create foie gras (French for “fat liver”), up to 2 kilograms of a grain, maize and fat mash are pumped into the stomachs of geese and ducks through a pipe two or three times a day. (This is roughly the equivalent of forcing 20 kilograms of pasta down a human throat each day.) As the birds’ livers expand to up to 10 times their normal size, the animals become sick, and many become immobile. The pipes sometimes puncture the birds’ throats – which causes them to bleed to death – and their internal organs sometimes rupture. Death rates during force-feeding are as much as 1,000 to 2,000 per cent greater than those of birds raised for other purposes.

Polls show that nearly two-thirds of Britons believe that foie gras sales should be banned. Sir John Gielgud was the first famous voice behind PETA’s campaign against foie gras. More recently, Sir Roger Moore narrated this graphic video that shows exactly how cruel foie gras production is. Sir Roger Moore, Phil Collins and The Duke and Duchess of Hamilton are all boycotting Selfridges until the company stops selling foie gras. Prince Charles has banned foie gras from Royal menus.

“I hope that my involvement with PETA’s campaign helps Selfridges see that ducks and geese who are force-fed to produce foie gras have bones, flesh and feelings just like me”, says Johnston. “Just like me, they suffer and feel pain. I won’t be shopping at Selfridges until they stop selling foie gras.”
