Q&A: Where do people get the idea that it is illegal to own a fully automatic firearm or an “assault rifle”?

November 4th, 2011 11 comments

Question by : Where do people get the idea that it is illegal to own a fully automatic firearm or an “assault rifle”?
in a state where your state laws do not prohibit such weapons?

As far as I knew, as long as the state law doesn’t make it illegal, all you had to do was go pay for the ATF $ 200 tax stamp, do the registration paperwork and get local law enforcement to sign off on it (which is pretty much at their discretion – they don’t have to sign it) and then you had to get an FBI background check run?

Assuming the weapon is of domestic manufacture, or foreign manufacture prior to 1986.
Free Candy: Those are fun to shoot. My cousin had a MAC-10 which is almost the same thing. And he had an M1928A1 Thompson also. But that was back in the day when you didn’t have to prove a legitimate storefront to get a FFL permit.
imfoxygirl: What “permit?” There is not a ‘permit’ given to own this stuff in states where it’s not already illegal. You simply have to do the legal run-around that I listed. This is coming from the ATF themselves whom I just called and asked what the law is in states where they aren’t illegal.
All an ‘assault rifle’ is, is a selective-fire rifle where you can switch between different firing modes. Like semi-auto, three-round burst or fully automatic fire.

It’s not as long as you have a class 3 weapons permit. My brother in law owns a full auto Uzi.

Edit: Man, that Thompson’s a relic! I love those guns.

Why is it that people think when someone mentions “Assault rifle”, people think the fully automatic versions?

November 4th, 2011 7 comments

Question by Russell Clank: Why is it that people think when someone mentions “Assault rifle”, people think the fully automatic versions?

@Wallace, trolling on this question is seriously uncalled for. Could you have some maturity and correct the way you phrased that?
@Newell, the point of modern military fighting isn’t making your shots count, it’s putting more lead into the air faster than your opponent. A semi-automatic weapon doesn’t let you squeaze down on the trigger once and take out the crowd, you’d need intense firearms training to be able to keep up what someone like Anders Bevirek was able to do by aiming as well as shooting rapidly enough to kill people. Most human beings are sickened at the prospect of having to kill another person. Having shot and owned a Semi-Automatic weapon, I preffer 10 round magazines and smaller to the 30 rounders. I still have the larger mags, but It takes me around a minute to empty them, and they make the gun heavier. I’m not ex-military, and wasn’t born with a killer inside me.

But, Full auto I agree is too far. Semi is fine.
@mo in the middle, I compensate for never leaving the state before I was sixteen, and I think guns are neat, and Dirty Harry was a badass! Model 29 baby! :) As for anything else ‘lacking’, I never got any complaints, so if I somehow am, I sure know how to use it right ;)

“No clue huh. Most of them are easily convertible to fully automatic.
I don’t know what you call an assault rifle but it’s an automatic weapon.
Why can’t you shoot geese with a shotgun like normal people?
The NRA sucks.”

Kid, you’re just ignorant. The only semi-automatic assault rifle that you can convert to full auto is the AK-47, and that essentially DESTROYS the weapon. If you try to fire it, it will shoot even after you let go of the trigger, potentially getting loose and killing whoever’s shooting it, and anyone who trys to convert one should be locked up.

Semi-automatic =/= fully automatic. Durr.

I hunt mallards with a shotgun, and I cook and eat them when I collect their carcasses, slowly cooking out the fat. Most normal people just let them rot/stuff them.

I beg to differ.

The HYSKORE® Portable Armorer’s Vise, The Ultimate AR-15 Rifle Cleaning Platform, is Available for Immediate Delivery

The perfect fixture for working on an AR 15

Huntington Station, NY (PRWEB) June 12, 2011

The Armorer’s Vise (http://www.hyskore.com) securely grips either the upper receiver or the butt stock section of the rifle. The vise assembly rotates 360° on a horizontal axis that can adjust to a wide range of angles. This way the upper receiver can be angled downward so that all cleaning gunk and debris run out the muzzle and not into the action or trigger group. For all guns, including rifles and shotguns the barrel can be effectively cleaned from the breech, which is always recommended.

“The advantage… is that the rifle is held in place while you’re running the cleaning rod back and forth. There is no juggling around while trying to simultaneously hold the rifle, manipulate the rod, getting patches on, trying not to spill that big…glass bottle of cleaning solution, etc. The cleaning process becomes a lot easier when the rifle is held in place in a fixture.”

Tod Spotti, published in the IHMSA News

“Sometimes the simplest devices are the handiest. That certainly holds true with the Portable Armorer’s Vise from Hyskore.

The Portable Armorer’s Vise breaks all the rules. It’s certainly very sturdy and it does have some “heft” to it but it’s also very easily portable.

Best of all, it rotates 360° so guns can be held at any angle for cleaning, scope mounting or maintenance. It’s also padded so that it takes good care of your gun while you’re working on it. A portable vise that just works just like one in your shop.” Clark Bush http://allaboutshooting.com/article_info.php?articles_id=479

“The Hyskore Portable weapon vise is a great tool that can be transported to your shooting location. It is a sturdy vise and has smooth operation. I have used this vise a few times already working on my AR15 at the range and it definitely makes things a lot easier. Whether it be detailed cleaning of your weapon or building a AR15 from the ground up a vise is definitely a must have tool. With this vise you can store it away when finished so it doesn’t take up all the space on your bench. This vise is definitely a “GO”. Chris Watkins http://www.gunn-fighter.com/hyskore-portable-gun-vise.html

The vise has an almost unlimited range of functional adjustments. The base can be clamped to the bench top with the 2 heavy duty turn bolts or it can be permanently lagged into place. The vise is also perfect for mounting a rifle scope or performing a wide range of other gun maintenance activities on almost any firearm. Although designed with the increasingly popular AR15 in mind, the Portable Armorer’s Vise easily adapts to all pump, semi-auto, bolt and lever action rifles and shotguns. Whether you are hunting the back forty, going to the shooting range, or on a safari the Portable Armorer’s Vise is the perfect firearms maintenance accessory.

A full range of long gun and handgun maintenance and shooting accessories including compression dampened recoil attenuating shooting and tactical / varmint rests is available from HYSKORE® . The line up consists of the DLX Precision Sighting Rest, the Dangerous Game® Machine Rest, the Ten Ring® Shooting & Varmint Rest, the Dead Eye® Tactical & Varmint Rest, the Parallax Cleaning and Sighting Rest, and the Black Gun® Machine Rest. These are all fully supported on the HYSKORE® .com website with instruction manuals, target down loads, and both demo and tutorial videos. Most importantly, these advanced shooting accessories are affordable to the average shooter.

Question by Black Hawk: Is the “Classic Army Sportline M15A4 Rifle” ( full size, not carbine) from Pyramid Air.com a good airosft gun?
I love the M16 and I found this at Pyramidair for $ 130 and that is the part I really like about it..it is cheap!! I have been wanting a JG G36K but Airsoft GI is out of stock and my airsoft team starts getting back into airsoft at the end of this montth and ASGI didn’t have a solid date of when they will have their G36′s back in and I thought this weapon is just as good. What do you think? Thanks!!

Yes. Any Classic Army airsoft gun is going to perform fairly well. If you can find an Echo 1, then I would say get that over a Classic Army sportline.

Question by death_is_close123: A member of the Brady Campaign shows up at your door demanding you turn over your “assault rifle”?
to the proper authorities. You explain to the increasingly more hostile Brady Campaign member that it is a legally owned firearm. In order to prove your innocence in the matter you retrieve your rifle from the closet and it is now pointing in his face… What do you do?

>:)
At least you admit I’m your father. More than I can say for your cousin who disowned me because I’ve fukked every woman in your family.
Frankly, I’m sleep deprived and angry that I can not seem to work my way around these lame California gun laws that the BRADY “bunch” Campaign has helped enact.

As to “revolution”, no, I was not talking about a “revolution”. Just a pissed off [legal] firearm owner that has had a hell of day and is uber mad at the fact that I can not do anything remotely cool in this state.

Where do people get the idea that it’s illegal to own an “assault rifle” or a fully-automatic firearm?

October 29th, 2011 5 comments

Question by : Where do people get the idea that it’s illegal to own an “assault rifle” or a fully-automatic firearm?
As far as I knew, an ‘assault rifle’ is just a rifle with a selector switch on it. And as for assault rifles and full autos, I thought as long as there was no law prohibiting them in your state, you simply had to do the run-around to get one. Buy the $ 200 ATF tax stamp, do the registration paperwork, get the FBI background check, and local law enforcement had to sign the paperwork and it’s basically at their discretion to do so.
Bobby: I’m in Wisconsin. They are not against the law here. I was just wondering why some people think it is illegal to own said weapons. Obviously they do not know the law.

Best answer:

Answer by Bobby
You can buy a so called “assault rifle” but fully automatic weapons are illegal in many places. You would have to check on the laws where you live. You, yourself, even state “as long as there was no law prohibiting them in your state”, so you must know they may be illegal.

Edit: So if they are legal in 34 states, they are illegal in 16 states, I guess. So what is wrong with my answer? I am amused by people who give thumbs down to perfectly reasonable answers. Thumbs down to you.

American Custom Gunmakers Guild Celebrates Gunmaking as Art Form – Jan. 22-24 in Reno – Exhibition Highlight Will be the Rifle Raffle

Reno, NV (PRWEB) October 10, 2009

You don’t have to be a builder to appreciate the work of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. And you don’t have to be a gun owner to value the artistry of a custom firearm.

Nowhere is that more apparent than Firearm #25, which will be raffled Jan. 24, 2010, by the American Custom Gunmakers Guild during the three-day Firearms Engravers & Gunmakers Exhibition in Reno, NV. For more information about the exhibition as well as the raffle, go to http://www.ACGG.org.

Each year a team of ACGG members creates a firearm project to showcase the art of custom gunmaking.

Co-founder Steve Billeb explains the Guild’s work as a way to “increase public awareness and appreciation for fine quality custom firearms and to generally advance custom gunmaking as an accepted art form.”

“These projects are inspired by historically famous firearm components, a specific theme or gun, or the specialties of team members,” organizers said.

This year’s project is “The Tip-Down Smallbore,” a .22 side-hammer created entirely from bar stock. Raffle tickets are $ 20 each.

“Tickets are limited to 4,000 and you don’t have to be present to win,” organizers said.

Metalwork on ACGG Firearm #25 was completed by Jimmy S. Johnson of Missouri. Stockmaker Craig Libhart of Pennsylvania shaped and finished the rifle stock. Tim George of Virginia did the intricate engraving. Jim Wear of Wyoming cased the gun in quarter-sawn oak and covered it with bark-tanned pigskin.

According to organizers, the project’s theme is reminiscent of turn-of-the-century British “Rook Rifles” built mainly between 1870 and 1930. Rook Rifles were the English gentleman’s choice for small game such as rabbits, hares, foxes, crows and rooks, a common bird in the English countryside.

The result is a gun that represents the rich American tradition of generations past when artisans used their well-honed skills to handcraft objects that were both beautiful and functional.

For a chance to own ACGG Firearm #25, send $ 20 per ticket to American Custom Gunmakers Guild, 22 Vista View Lane, Cody, WY, 82414 or visit the Guild’s Web site at http://www.ACGG.org. All state and federal laws apply.

ABOUT ACGG: The American Custom Gunmakers Guild (ACGG) is an incorporated nonprofit organization that came into existence in 1983 at the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention in Phoenix. In 2008 the ACGG celebrated its 25th anniversary year.

Yes, If they were manufactured prior to 1986 and are “Transferable”. Cost would be high however somewhere in the $ 10,000 – $ 15,000 range.

Comparing the Beretta to an M16 series weapon is like comparing Apples to Oranges. Both are good high quality weapons. Both are very expensive to legally own.

Beretta AR70 Sport models – those that are semi automatic only cost considerable less than their FA counterparts – about $ 1500 – $ 2500. No special license or tax stamp is needed for these rifles in most of the US. Some states do restrict ownership of them however. Check your states laws to find out what their rules are.

To my Canadian brother. Our US Constitution guarantee’s the freedom to own guns (2nd Amendment). While that freedom has been impinged upon we are still allowed full automatic (FA) weapons under Federal law with some exceptions. Some states have banned the ownership of FA totally. There is a $ 200 Tax stamp (fee/license) to own FA firearms in addition to the cost of the gun itself. We have lots of “gun control” laws. None of which have ever stopped a criminal from acquiring or using a firearm.

To answer your comment about why would you need one………….its not about needs……….its about rights.

trying to build a 270 “sniper rifle” or a 300 win mag?

Question by gus: trying to build a 270 “sniper rifle” or a 300 win mag?
trying to find cheap ways to build a rifle…i called it a sniper rifle but really its going to just be a fun project to work on and have a nice looking gun afterwards. i would like to find an action for either a 700 or a 110 but i am not finding any actions alone…i know i can find a used gun but i’d kinda like to see what i can find online for actions first.

so if anyone know’s of any websites that sell actions alone or if they are dealer direct or if they just plain dont exist please let me know.

also which would be better base for a fun 500 yard rifle the 700 rem or the 110 sav…
