Goose Decoys
Tips on Decoying Geese
Decoys act as visual stimuli that lure geese within your shotgun range. The more visible your staging formation is the better your odds are in drawing in the geese. Where you stage your formation as well as the amount of decoys used, sizes, contrast, and movements all play a role in luring in the geese.
Location Tips
- Set up goose decoys is where there is an ample amount of foods that geese naturally feed on such as grass, hay, barley, corn, and beans.
- Location should appear safe to the geese. The larger the open area is the better. Geese will avoid situations that will put them at risk of prey such as ditches, fences, rock piles, heavy overgrowth, and brush.
- Take into consideration of how visible you can stage your decoys. Hilly areas make for great visibility if they are on a open range
- Remember that geese land into the wind when staging your decoys. Use the “V” formation with the tip of the “V” into the wind with the open-end on the downwind side or the “C” formation in the same fashion.
- On windy cold days, stage decoys a little less then a third of the way down the hill staggering a few closer to the top for visibility purpose. Geese will naturally land where they can find some relief from the cold and wind.
